Fresh snow throws back most of the ultraviolet that lands on it, and every thousand metres of altitude adds more again. A dark lens is not the answer to that — a measured one is, with the gap at the side of your face closed.

A lens category is a measurement, not a mood: 4 passes between 3 and 8 percent of visible light, which is the band glacier and high-altitude snow actually call for. The leather side shields matter as much — on ice, most of the light reaching your eyes arrives from below and beside you, where a frame has nothing in its way.
